This regatta is held in early to mid october.  It was initiated in 1999, and run by Riverfront Recapture Inc. The Head of the Charles

The largest regatta in the country, it attracts schools from the West coast, Canada and overseas. Held on the Charles river dividing Cambridge and Boston, it can bring out large crowds if the weather is good. The river is fairly narrow, with many curves, so this race is a real test of the coxswain's skills and can provide some nerve-wracking moments as boats try to pass each other. Only the first varsity Boys' and Girls' boats attend this regatta.  The boats row on Sunday of the two day regatta.  The team arrives in Boston on Saturday to have a practice row on the race course.  Then they go out to lunch and dinner in the Boston area.

For driving, take 84 East to the Mass Pike (U.S. Route 90) east toward Boston. Take the Allston/Cambridge exit (a left exit) and ask the officers where you can park.

Parking is difficult, and you will probably do a great deal of walking at this race. There is a good view of the course from almost anywhere along either side of its three-mile length. Our crews launch from the F.A.L.S. (Finish Area Launch Site).  Simsbury parents have often gathered at the Weeks Street footbridge, where you can see the crews come up to the bridge, and you can run to the opposite side to see them proceed upriver. The other traditional spot is the Elliot Street Bridge, the last turn at the end of the course.

2007:  Simsbury will be represented by the girls only this year.  The boys crew did not obtain an entry through the lottery.  The girls will race at 11:20 and are bow #31.

Spring Races

Tabor Cup (Charles A. Pincombe Cup)

This race began as a traditional duel race between Simsbury and Tabor Academy.  A pitcher was donated by Paul Carabillo in the late 1980's. The "Cup" is named for Charles A. Pincombe.  Charlie was a team supporter who was a river resident who sculled and had helped remove trees (obstacles) for several years.  Up until a few seasons ago his house was raked as part of the fall raking fundraiser.  The regatta is now held on Lake Quinsigamond.  Current participants include: Simsbury, Tabor Academy, Shrewsbury, East Lyme, Boston Latin (G), Stonington, and St. John's (B).

Kent Scrimmage

The 1-3 boys and girls boats travel to Kent School on the Wednesday of April vacation week.  Each crew rows practice with the equivelant Kent crew.  We row several 2-3 min start, body, and finish pieces.  Traditionally we are off the water around 4:00 to 4:15. Athletes should check with the coaches to see what rowers and coxswains are attending the scrimmage.

2008:  Beautiful weather reigned supreme  on Wednesday May 23.  Simsbury brought 5 crews to Kent School and ran a  series of 2 min pieces at equal boat level.  A great day of pieces where both schools learned something.  This was our boats 5th practice in 3 days.  They were required to dig a little deeper then they thought they could.  Kudos to all a crews on a well rowed practice.  Also thank you to Kent School rowers and coaches for hosting us.

April Vacation

Crew Practices over the April break.  Attendance is mandatory for sophomores, juniors, and seniors.  Vacation falls in the middle of racing season.  We have races on both Saturdays of vacation.  Practice schedules are set by individual coaches for their team.  However the varsity and jv generally practice twice on Monday, Tuesday, and Friday.  We also take the 1-3 boys and girls to Kent to scrimmage on Wednesday.  Usually we give varsity and JV Thursday off.  Athletes are asked to make college visitation plans for Thursday.

Connecticut Public Schools Rowing Association (CPSRA)

This regatta was organized in 1999 by the coaches at Simsbury High School along with several other public school coaches around the state. CPSRA includes crews from almost all the public school rowing programs in the State of Connecticut. The regatta was initiated to provide broad competition for all levels of rowers and all sizes of programs. Another goal has been to develop information and cooperation among public school programs in the state. In the short time since its inception, both the regatta and the number of schools with crew programs have increased significantly.

CPSRA competition includes both eights and fours, and provides races for novice as well as varsity and junior varsity crews.  The coaches seek additional volunteer support from parents for this event. This race is held at Lake Waramaug  on the Sunday before the 4th Saturday in May.

Stotesbury Cup Regatta
Simsbury participated in this regatta from the late 70's until 1999.  It is held on the Schuylkill river in Phildelphia, PA.  Simsbury has had much success at the regatta over the years.  However, missed class time and failure of crews to advance past the heats led Simsbury to search for a regatta closer to home.

Head of the Fish

Simsbury was attending this fall head race for about a 5 year period from 1994-1998.  The coaching staff had some concerns about how the regatta was run and the 3 hour drive each way.  We now row at regattas closer to home.  Over the years we attended Simsbury won the boys junior 8, girls junior 8, boys frosh 8 and the girls frosh 8 at least once each.

Directions to Races

Harbor Park in Middletown

    • To get to Harbor Park, pick up Route 9 south in Farmington.
    • Off Route 9 in Middletown, take the first right exit just after the second traffic light (deKovan Ave. and Harbor Area).
    • Turn left at the end of the ramp, then left at the next light (if you're allowed; this may be blocked off the Head of the Connecticut, but not necessarily for other races) and look for somewhere to park.
Depending on where you can park, you may have to walk under the highway toward the river to see the race. Unlike some other sites, there is not a lot of walking to do at these races.

Charter Oak Landing

    • To get to Charter Oak Landing, from North of Hartford, take I-91 South to Brainard Road, exit 27.
    • At the end of the ramp, turn left.
    • At the light in front of McDonald's turn left.
    • Follow to the next light and turn left onto Reserve Road. Pass CT Regional Market on your left, the entrance to the park will be on your right.
    • For maps and information, www.riverfront.org.
This venue allows viewing from many good vantage points along the Connecticut River: the finish line at Riverfront Plaza at the end of State Street in Hartford, sidewalks across the Founders Bridge, and the open grassy area along the river in East Hartford’s Great River Park, where the Colt Dome provides background to the view and the photos. Wear comfortable shoes, as there can be a lot of walking from the launch area to the different viewing points toward the finish line.

Lake Quinsigamond

More of our races are held here than anywhere else. Lake Quinsigamond is in Worcester, MA, about 80 miles from Simsbury. Viewing races here does not necessarily require a lot of walking. There are some good commercial establishments within walking distance. The Regatta Deli makes good sandwiches at reasonable prices, or you can cross the bridge over the lake and walk to Spags, a renowned discount store with an old-fashioned character. In the shopping plaza on the right just over the bridge is Panera, a good place for Starbucks-like coffee, plus interesting pastries, soup, and sandwiches.
    • To get to Lake Quinsigamond, take 84 East to the Mass Pike.
    • Get off the Mass Pike at exit 10 (the first exit after you got on at Sturbridge).
    • Get onto Interstate 290 North, which will take you through Worcester.
    • Take Plantation Street exit (21).
    • Turn Right at the end of the ramp, and then take your first Left onto Natural History Road.
    • Follow this road along the lake, and the park will be on your Left across from the UMass Medical Center.

Lake Waramaug

This lake in New Preston is the site for the Halloween Regatta and a number of spring races. It offers a beautiful location and a very fine race course (straight, with mostly flat water). It can be buggy in the spring. It is located about 40- 45 miles from Simsbury in western Connecticut. This is one of the few races where it is possible to get a good view of the start of the race, if you care to drive or bicycle to it, back along the road you came in on.
    • To get to Waramaug, take Route 44 to Canton.
    • Take a Left onto Route 179 going toward Collinsville. Go through Collinsville and take a Left after the bridge.
    • Take a Right onto Route 4 west.
    • Follow Route 4 to Route 118.
    • Take Route 118 to Route 202 West.
    • Follow Route 202 through Bantam and Woodville to New Preston.
    • In New Preston, there will be a sign for a Right turn to Lake Waramaug State Park.
    • When you see the lake, you may go either right or left to get to the race site.
    • The traffic around the lake will be one way.  Please follow requests of all traffic control personal.
Clean up after yourselves and do not give the park personnel a hard time.  There are often athletes and boats crossing or coming down the road.  Please drive slowly and carefully.
Parking for the Kent Race and CPSRA is limited.  CARPOOLING is ENCOURAGED!!!!
